This month the Elasmo of the Month is the Stingray (Dasyatis pastinaca). Most people might not be aware that this species even occurs in Irish water but it is common in a number of areas including Tralee Bay where it is regularly encountered by anglers. EEA 2010 – Registration Closed

Registration for the EEA 2010 conference is now closed. We had a very good response and a list of delegates and presentations will be available soon on the IEG website.

EEA Auction

The annual EEA Auction will be held after the Conference dinner in the Oslo Bar. More details will be announced shortly however as usual the money raised will go towards the student bursaries for the next years EEA conference.

If you have anything that you think will raise some money and you want to donate please bring it with you to the conference or email eea2010@irishelasmobranchgroup.org to arrange to send it to us before the conference.

Early registration closes 31st July

Early registration for EEA 2010 closes 31st July. Registration is only complete when BOTH the online registration form is submitted and payment is made through the paypal system.

Late registration will incur a €40 penalty and will be accepted until to 31st August.

EEA 2010 – Submission Extended

Thanks to everyone who submitted their abstracts on time. The standard of abstracts has been very high and it is sure to make for an exciting conference. However due to popular demand there has been a call for extension of the abstract submission deadline. Therefore there is an extra 16 days to get your abstracts in. The new submission date is Wednesday 16th June. The majority of candidates so far have requested oral presentations which is great but we would also like to encourage poster presentations.

To submit your abstract go to the Abstract Submission Page or check out the Key Dates for changes to the schedule.

EEA 2010 – New key dates added

The EEA Board Meeting and the EEA AGM will be held in NUI Galway on the first day of the EEA conference, Wednesday 10th November. The provisional times and locations are listed below and also on the EEA 2010 Key Dates page. The welcome reception will follow these meetings and will be held in Galway Atlantaquaria.

EEA Board meeting, Martin Ryan Institute (Board Room), NUI Galway – 10^th November, 11:00 – 14:00.

EEA AGM, Aula Maxima, The Quadrangle, NUI Galway – 10^th November, 14:30 – 16:00.

EEA 2010 – First Announcement

The IEG is pleased to announce that it will be hosting the 14th Annual European Elasmobranch Association Conference in Galway, 10th-13th November 2010. This international conference is a key feature on the EEA calendar and an opportunity to showcase the elasmobranch research currrently being undertaken in Ireland, Europe and further afield.

This is the first time the EEA conference has been held in Ireland and we look forward to giving you a warm welcome to Galway. For further information check out EEA 2010. More information will be added regularly.

Baby undulate ray hatches at Galway Atlantaquaria

The undulate ray (Raja undulata) is one of the rarest species in Irish waters. They are usually only found in the highly diverse waters of Tralee Bay and have become increasingly rare in recent years.

The successful breeding of undulate rays in captivity is an exciting development and may offer some hope for their future in Irish waters. Check out the full story on the Galwat Atlantaquaria website.
